A DTP Program by Andrew Martin
Program and Text by Andrew Martin
[MAIN MENU]
Hi-Res Workstation's main menu
screen has many selections to make
working with the main program easier.
At the left of the screen is the menu
display consisting of various
selections to be made by the keys (1-
9). The right of the screen has the
"screens" link display followed by
"memory info" and at the bottom is
the "drive" commands.
[MENU#1 (1-9)]
1 GOTO SCREENs
Selecting GOTO SCREENs will take
you to the hi-res screens. You will
be in freehand draw mode (see
freehand draw for more information).
RETURN from this mode will exit back
to the menu screen. To access other
modes use the function keys listed
below.
f1 Window Edit
f3 Graphic Transparent
f5 Text Mode
f7 Pixel Edit
For details on these functions
see the article of the same name. A
RETURN from these functions will exit
back to freehand draw. A SHIFTed
RETURN will exit back to main menu.
You may go between all modes at will
at anytime. You don't have to exit
out of one mode to go to another!
2 I/O' SCREENs
This selection will let you LOAD
and SAVE from one to three screens
depending on the link status. To LOAD
screen(s) select 2 and a question
mark will appear next to I/O?. Select
I for INPUT (LOAD) screen(s) from
disk and use the file requestor or
type in a file name and hit RETURN.
To SAVE screen(s) you will have to
GOTO SCREENS first and use CTRL X to
select which screen. Then select I/O'
SCREENs followed by O for OUTPUT
(SAVE) screen to disk. Either type in
a name or use the file requestor to
fetch one.
[NOTE:] See FILE REQUESTOR/SCREEN
LINKing for more information.
3 I/O' GRAPHICs
I/O' GRAPHICs allows you to
LOAD/SAVE 3-block Print Shop (PS)
graphics from/to disk. These graphics
are used in GRAPHIC TRANSPARENT mode.
To LOAD/SAVE a graphic select 3 and
type either I for INPUT(LOAD) or O
for OUTPUT(SAVE). To SAVE there has
to be some graphics in memory that
are PS size.
4 I/O' WINDOWs
This works like I/O' GRAPHICs but
uses WINDOWs instead. The difference
is windows are variable in their size
while graphics are all the same size.
In order to SAVE there must be some
graphics in memory.
[NOTE:] Please see Graphic Trans for
more information about menu
selections 3 and 4.
5 I/O' FONTs
Select I/O' FONTs to LOAD and
SAVE a set of fonts to disk. This
makes using a multiple set of fonts
easier. You don't have to manually
LOAD each font.
[NOTE]: See Text Mode for more
information.
6 I/O' SYSTEM
This will LOAD/SAVE all graphics,
font and text settings. Even speed
setting will be LOADed/SAVEd. This
will be very handy to SAVE all before
you stop work on a project. The only
thing that won't be SAVEd is the
SCREENs.
7 I/O' SECTION
Even using all three screens
isn't enough to cover a whole printed
page. So documents are split up into
multiscreen format allowing you to
LOAD/SAVE a section at will.
DOCUMENT format
"a1 name" "a2 name" "a3 name"
"b1 name" "b2 name" "b3 name"
"c1 name" "c2 name" "c3 name"
When you select I/O' SECTION and
use either I for INPUT (LOAD) or O
for OUTPUT (SAVE) which prefix will
be highlighted depends on the LINK
configuration. Use the CRSR keys and
RETURN to select. Once you've
selected the section, you will be
taken to the file requestor screen
where you will either use the
directory or type in the rest of the
file name. If you've been working
with a document the rest of the file
name may already be present.
8 GOTO UTILITY
Utilities are programs that are
LOADed and RUN from the main program.
Each of these programs perform some
task for the user and then exits to
(LOADS) the main program back.
Presently the only Utilities are the
u-print utilities. A SHIFT Q will
always prompt you to exit a utility.
9 GOTO PRINTER
Printer programs are Utilities
that begin with the u-print prefix.
Pressing 9 then RETURN will LOAD the
first printer file on disk. To select
a printer file use the file
requestor.
[NOTE:] See Printer for more
information.
MENU#2 (1-5)
To change menus use BACK ARROW.
Anytime you see a BACK ARROW at the
top/left corner of the menu box this
means there is more than one menu
present.
1 GOTO ACCESSORY
This will execute an ACCESSORY as
a subroutine from the main program.
Follow the instructions of the
accessory program.
2 LOAD ACCESSORY
This will LOAD an ACCESSORY from
disk to reside in memory. Once an
accessory is LOADed it can be
executed by GOTO ACCESSORY.
3 CLR' ACCESSORY
Selecting this will put a
question mark next to CLR?. Answer
"Y" to CLEAR the ACCESSORY from
memory.
[NOTE:] Presently there are no
accessories available, but there are
a few in the works that will be
available in the future.
4 CLR' FONTs
This will prompt you to clear all
fonts from memory so that new fonts
can be LOADed.
5 CLR' GRAPHICs
This will prompt you to clear all
graphics from Graphic Transparent
Mode.
6 LOAD FILE?
Selecting this will allow you to
LOAD many PRG files that aren't
compatible with Workstation's hi-res
screen format. When you press 6 the
skip prompt will appear next to LOAD.
This is the number of bytes to skip
until the picture (hi-res bitmap)
information begins. The default of
1024 will work for most (Doodle,
Runpaint, etc). Remember to GOTO
SCREENS to select the screen you will
LOADing over first.
"screens" display
The screens display shows the
current link status. Two to three
screens may be linked across or down.
To link the screens you first need to
select the HOME screen (the top/left
most screen). GOTO SCREENs and make
the desired screen selection with
CTRL X then press RETURN. Now you
should be back on the main menu
screen. Press the L key and a
selector should appear next to
"screens" display. Now by using keys
1-5 you can select the desired link
configuration.
1 no link (unlink)
2 across 2
3 across 3
4 down 2
5 down 3
After you make a selection the
"screens" display should reflect any
changes made to the LINK status.
File Requestor
All files will be LOADed/SAVEd
through the file requestor. When
you're looking at the file requestor
screen you will see a large empty box
at the bottom of the screen. This is
the file requestor box. To get a list
of files off disk press UP ARROW and
a list of files along with number of
blocks and file type will appear. The
current selected file will be hi-
lighted. To move the selector bar use
CRSR UP and DOWN. HOME will move to
the top while [\] (English pound)
will move to the bottom. If the drive
light is still active, pressing DOWN
when on the last file may reveal more
file names. The list will scroll to
accommodate any additional names. To
select a name just hit RETURN after
moving the selector over it. The list
will match any characters that are in
the input box. You can search for any
prefix by typing them in before
selecting directory. Of course, if
you know the file name, you can just
type it in and press RETURN.
When saving files you can use the
directory to fetch a file name. Then
you can either SAVE with replace
(SHIFTed RETURN) or SAVE a variation
of that file name.
"drive" display
Directory (UP ARROW)
Use the UP ARROW key if you need
the contents of the current disk in
the drive. You may also search for
matches of any kind by typing the
appropriate letters in the input
box.
Device (*)
Use the asterisk (*) to change
the current drive number. This may
range from 8 to 15.
Disk commands (@)
The "at symbol" (@) is used to
give a disk command. Below are a few
examples of 1541 disk commands.
NEW n:file name,id
VALIDATE v:
INITIALIZE i:
SCRATCH s:file name
RENAME r:old name=new name
[NOTE:] It may be useful to use the
directory to get a file name prior to
using disk commands.
"memory info" display
One thing that is a little
difficult with this program is how to
manage the 8k (8192 bytes) of RAM set
aside for fonts, graphics, or/and
accessories. Fortunately, this memory
is displayed under "memory info" on
the main screen. Memory for fonts and
accessories are d
